`THE HISTORY OF MELROSE LODGE NO 1294

In the mid 1940's, travel to and from Masonic Lodges was only available to those that had vehicles or could get a ride from another Brother. Lodges were located some 15 to 20 miles apart and traveling was very difficult at times due to inclement weather.

August 14, 1945, R.L. Poarch sent a letter to Kurtz E. Gaugler (D.D.G.M.) Stating that some 75 Master Masons prepared a petition for dispensation to form a new Masonic Lodge in the Vicinity of the Berry Elementary School Building and that they held four semi-monthly meetings. This petition was seeking concurrent jurisdiction with the other lodges of the Houston District.

December 5, 1945 The Grand Lodge issued a charter to Melrose Lodge No. 1294 for the 30th. Masonic district, and was signed by: R.W.G.M. Bascom Giles.

January 8, 1946 The first official meeting under the Charter of Melrose Lodge No. 1294, was held in the Humble Lodge No. 929 at 8:00 p.m. and the Officers of Melrose Lodge was duly installed.

June 5, 1947 The first meeting was held in the new Melrose Lodge Building at 2826 Luell Street, Houston, Texas.
